
The Windsor Lancers women’s volleyball team travelled up to Ottawa for a weekend double-header in the nation’s capital against the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
On Saturday the Lancers battled back at Monpetit Hall to earn a 3-2 (25-23, 17-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12) victory, and on Sunday Windsor won with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-14, 26-24, and 26-24) result over the Gee-Gees.
With the pair of wins the Lancers have now competed their season with a 13-7 record on the campaign.
WEEKEND STATS
Aliah Admans had 18 kills on Saturday and added another 14 kills on Sunday leading the Lancers offensively over Ottawa.
Jordyn Brearley also had a big weekend offensively with 13 kills on Saturday and another 10 kills on Sunday.
Danika Scharff had 43 assists during the five-set thriller on Saturday and added another 39 assists on Sunday to help propel her team to lock up a post-season position following the regular season finale.
SATURDAY GAME FLOW
Both teams came out of the gate equally competitive finding ways to score at the same rate. The blue and gold found a way to round out the first set on top 25-23 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Ottawa would find a response in the second set with getting their offensive flow going throughout and earning a 25-17 equalizing win to stalemate the match up at 1-1.
The Gee-Gees would keep the same energy going into the third set despite the Lancers also holding strong early on. Ottawa would go on a run that contained three service aces during the stretch that helped the Gee-Gees win 25-22 and give them a 2-1 lead up on the Lancers.
The resilient Lancers came back with a response of their own in the fourth set finding ways to remain in the hunt with consistent and persistent play which propelled them to a 25-19 fourth set win and push the Gee-Gees into a fifth and final deciding set with the game deadlocked at 2-2.
Windsor led early in the fifth set, but Ottawa replied with tying up the set at 8-8 and again a few times were both sides were tied up until the 12-12 mark before the Lancers crossed the finish line with a 15-12 wrap up earning a 3-2 comeback win over the Gee-Gees.
SUNDAY GAME FLOW
The Lancers held an advantage throughout most of the set which included holding a 24-19 set-point lead before the Gee-Gees stormed back with consecutive points late in the set to overturn the Windsor advantage for Ottawa to earn a 26-24 first set win and earn a 1-0 lead.
Windsor jumped out to a 10-2 lead to kick off the second set keeping control of the set cruising to a 25-14 second set win reply to tie the match up at one set apiece.
Following the eleven-point convincing second set win, both teams returned to the floor with a new rejuvenated spirit where extra point territory was achieved again for the next two sets.
The Lancers were tenaciously tested by the Gee-Gees in the third and fourth set which ultimately the blue and gold was able to take care of business with identical 26-24 results to wrap up the Sunday afternoon matinee on top 3-1 and punch their ticket to the post-season.
